It was raining and I was not able to take the picture of the
center city area. We are planning on returning later in this week
so I hope to get them then. After a buffet breakfast including
smoked Reindeer meat, cheese, and Swedish pastry (note I did not
say Danish pastry) we took a 20-minute cab ride to Gustavsberg.
The hotel is like a hostel and will serve us well for the next
two weeks.
We arrived at the factory bright and early at 9 a.m., and were greated by officials of the factory and made welcome. We were given a tour of the working operations. Their kilns are all automated as is the glazing. They place the round bar code cylinder into the kiln along with the toilet. The bar code is printed with ceramic material so that it does not burn away in the firing. As the toilet progresses through the kiln onto the sorting conveyer has a scanner that reads the code and sends it to the proper line for inspection grinding and storage. They test the shrinkage by firing round donuts. After the firing they measure the fired size to determine the shrinkage. They can also measure the firing temperature this way.
We visited the mold making plaster area and then to the casting areas and the kilns. We ended the tour in the products showroom. The surprise is the urinal which has a decal of a bee inside to be used as an aiming spot.
Lastly we were taken to our work space.
