10/21/00
We awakened on October 20th at 3:00 Am in preparation for our plane flight to Chicago, which left at 6:30 AM. Following a 4-hour layover in Chicago we started our 7 1/2-hour flight to Stockholm. We arrived in Stockholm at 8 AM. After a 20-minute taxi ride to the city center of Old Town we dropped off our luggage at the First Hotel Reisen and walked around the famous central Stockholm area. Shops line the narrow cobblestone streets and I easily imagined how this has changed little over the past 100s of years. At 9:30 Am the streets were completely vacant and we were absolutely alone looking in windows of boutiques, art galleries and craft shops. At 10AM people started to show up and by 10:30 AM the streets were packed with tourists. As noon approached we ate a light lunch in a small caf and returned to the hotel to find our room ready. You can see from the pictures that the accommodations are a classic Stockholm hotel with its roots in the 18th century, which is known for it's genuine furnishings. The hotel is under going a two-year renovation that is almost complete. The bathroom (our fixation on this trip) was modern and elegant complete with sauna, whirlpool and a WC made in the Gustavsberg porcelain factory where we are going.
